How To Flavor CBD Oil?

Published: 23-06-2021

Is the natural flavor of CBD oil too much to handle? Our guide on how to flavor CBD oil can help you address this problem. With the intense flavor that CBD oil offers, many people look for ways to mask it. Whilst some people opt for flavored oil, this may not be the best option for everyone.

Thus, our guide below explores the many different methods you can employ to flavor your oil in addition to opting for readymade flavored CBD oil. So, check it out to find which method works for you.

What Affects The Flavor Of CBD Oil?

When thinking about the flavor of CBD oil, terpenes are compounds worth considering. After all, these compounds are what affect the taste, smell, and color of CBD. If you have noticed, different grades and types of cannabis have a distinct smell. For example, one type may have a citrus-like smell whilst the other can have a rather sweet smell.

Thus, if you want to change the flavor of your CBD oil, terpenes are what you should be working with. Terpenes are a group of chemical compounds found in plants and trees such as cannabis, their primary role is to create a defense mechanism for the plants – protecting them from parasites. They do this by producing a strong odor and taste. One such example of how terpenes work is the distinctive smell they produce in conifers.

Unbeknownst to many people, the smell terpenes offer in plants also has a profound effect on humans. For example, by-products of terpenes such as limonene and linalool affect your mood and state of mind. When consumed, these provide a rather therapeutic effect – allowing you to calm your nerves and uplift your mood. Thus, the flavor is not only what you taste, but, also how it affects your body.

What Exactly Does CBD Oil Taste Like?

The same way our bodies interact differently with cannabis; our taste buds differ based on the flavor of CBD oil they pick up. Nonetheless, people have reported the same flavor profile descriptions. CBD oil has been described to taste earthy, nutty, and grass-like.

But, terpenes are not the only compounds that affect flavor. Different chemical structures also affect the flavor of your CBD oil. Different categories of CBD oils have varying flavor profiles. For example, broad spectrum CBD oil tastes differently than CBD isolate. Remember, CBD isolate doesn’t contain any THC. Thus, it only consists of CBD.   Broad spectrum CBD oil, on the other hand, contains cannabinoids and terpenes which affect the flavor profile.

Whilst the flavor profiles aren't unbearable, they are still not the best for most people. Whilst some people like this rich flavor profile, some think it is a little too intense – much like dark chocolate or similar profile strengths. Therefore, many people prefer to mask this flavor profile with other compounds. Remember, when ingested, CBD oil is not regularly taken in as food or drinks.

Instead, it is placed under the tongue for about 30 seconds to allow for absorption in a process known as sublingual administration. This process speeds up absorption into the bloodstream. Flavor-wise, you will not really pick up the actual flavor but, rather get the hints of the flavor profile. Therefore, when learning how to add flavor to CBD oil, all you have to do is to create a favorable profile you can tolerate.

How To Add Flavor To CBD Oil

You can find several ways to mask the flavor of CBD oil. One of the ways to do so is by adding flavor to it.

Complement CBD Oil With Other Flavors

The easiest way to add flavor to CBD oil is by complementing it with other compounds during the actual ingestion process. With this method, you don't really have to directly add any elements to the oil – making it cost-effective and convenient.

Most of the compounds you can pair with the oil can be readily found in your home. For example, you can chew a few mint leaves before or after ingesting CBD oil to quickly extinguish the smell of CBD oil. If mint leaves are too intense for you, simply opt for mint drops a few minutes before you place the CBD oil drops underneath your tongue.

Artificial Flavoring

You are more likely to find artificial flavoring in CBD products such as CBD gummies. However, it’s not impossible to find flavored CBD oil either. There are two ways to enjoy flavored CBD oil. You can opt for commercially available flavored CBD oil or make some yourself.

You can find a wide variety of flavored CBD oils from different brands in different flavors and price ranges in the market. To make flavored oil, you simply have to infuse the base oils with essential oils to create the flavor profile you want.

Start by choosing the base oil, also known as the carrier oil. These oils are important as they facilitate easier absorption and promote the effects of CBD in your system. For base oils, you want to opt for oils with a high fat content such as coconut oil. These types of oils bind easily with CBD and increase its levels.

The next step is choosing the essential oils you will infuse with your base oils and CBD oils. The choice of essential oils you go for depends on the effects you want. Just like when you are making perfumes or hair oil, you can opt for different essential oils. For example, food-grade bergamot essential oil features a citrus profile. It also adds extra benefits to your CBD oil. These include aiding in digestion, lowering cholesterol, and boasting anti-bacterial properties.

Ginger essential oil offers the subtle punch to mask unwanted richness whilst offering anti-bacterial, digestive, and laxative properties. Peppermint offers a refreshing taste whilst improving digestion and breath. Alternatively, you can also opt to use flavorings instead of essential oils. A good example is vanilla – which is a popular flavor. You can find a myriad of food-grade essential oils and flavorings in the market to suit your palate needs.

Add CBD Oil To Foods

Alternatively, if working with essential oils and flavoring is too much, you can opt for the next easier method. Simply add CBD oil to your food. For example, you can add a few drops to your coffee or blend it with your morning smoothie.

Other ways you can take your CBD oil include, adding a few drops o your toothpaste before you brush or adding it to your food- such as eggs and bacon. You can even add CBD oil drops to meals or snacks such as pizza or chocolate.

How to Flavor Oil – Final Verdict

The bottom line is there are plenty of ways to add flavor to CBD oil. However, if the methods above don't work for you, it doesn't mean it's the end of the world. There are plenty of other ways you can get your CBD fix without having to use oils. You can choose to vape, smoke, eat edibles, or even, use topical CBD.
